STATEMENTS
Let me therefore begin by warmly welcoming our guests to Namibia. I would also like to commend the Institute for Public Policy Research, as well as the South African Institute of International Affairs, and the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung, for organizing this very important Workshop. As we are aware, the African Peer Review Mechanism, is one of the most important innovative initiatives which places a high premium on the promotion of democracy, good political and economic governance, as well as good corporate governance, and socio-economic development.
MEDIA STATEMENT, SUBJECT: NAMIBIA CONCERNED ABOUT THE SITUATION IN SYRIA, 16 APRIL 2018
The Government of the Republic of Namibia is deeply concerned about the ongoing developments in Syria. As a State Party to the UN chemical Weapons Convention, Namibia welcomes the Statement issued by the African Union on 15th April 2018, on the situation regarding Syria.
Since I had the distinct honor of motivating to this August House the 2017/2018 appropriation of the Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation, a number of events and activities have taken place, regionally and globally, all of which bear significant impact on international relations in general, and our national pursuit for sustained economic growth and sustainable development, in particular.
I am delighted and honoured to warmly welcome Your Excellency, and your esteemed delegation to the Republic of Namibia. I am also grateful that you were able to find time from your busy schedule to visit Namibia, for us to consult on issues of mutual interests. I am confident that our deliberations will be fruitful.
At the invitation of H.E. Xi Jinping, President of the People’s Republic of China, H.E. Dr. Hage G. Geingob, President of the Republic of Namibia paid a State Visit to China from 28th March to 2nd April 2018. Part of the significance of this State Visit lies in the fact that China being a power granted Namibia opportunity to visit China after the landmark Communist Party of China (CPC) Congress.
I extend warm and special welcome to Your Excellency, Professor Dussey and your delegation. I value your presence among us here today, highly and thank you for accepting my invitation to visit Namibia in order to engage in fruitful discussions on issues of mutual interest. Our two countries share a common history of the same German colonialization in the past.
At the outset, let me take this opportunity to welcome you and your delegation to Namibia, a country whose annals cannot be complete without referring to the all-round assistance and support rendered by the Government and People of your country to our Liberation Struggle. I am one of the beneficiaries of your country’ support when I was accorded an opportunity to study at the Lenin High Kosomol School.
On behalf of the Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation warmly congratulate Adv. Bience Gawanas on her appointment by United Nations Secretary General Mr. Antonio Guterres, as UN Special Advisor on Africa with the rank of Under Secretary General, the third highest rank after that of the Secretary General and Deputy Secretary General. Adv. Gawanas will be based at the UN Headquarters in New York. I also congratulate Ambassador Selma Ashipala-Musavyi on her appointment as a member of the United Nations Secretary-General Advisory Board on Disarmament Matters.
The Namibian Government has learned with disgust and reprehension about the alleged derogatory remarks of President Donald Trump on 11 January 2018, with regard to African countries and immigrants. Such language has no place in diplomatic discourse and is contrary to the norms of civility and human progress. Further, it does not contribute to international cooperation. Namibia commends those American people who have disassociated themselves with these derogatory remarks.
